How SIMRP Health
Benefits Businesses & Employees
What is A SIMRP Wellness Program
SIMRP stands for Self-Insured Medical Reimbursement Plan . When your business participates in our SIMRP, you get two great opportunities for your business, employees & their families:
Preventive Care Management Program: The program is a collection of benefits that you and your dependents can use with no copays or other costs. This includes telemedicine, prescription drugs and specialties like the Anura® Facial Scan app, access to the Mayo Clinic®'s talks and programs and much more! These benefits are accessed through a Personal Portal using your laptop, tablet, or phone. For a closer look at the complete offering of benefits, please see our Benefits page.
Tax Savings & Increase to Take-Home Pay: The SIMRP premium is deducted on a pre-tax basis from the employee's paycheck, which generates tax savings that enables participants to purchase the wellness benefits without coming out of pocket! In fact the tax savings is typically large enough to cover the wellness plan and generate a net take-home pay increase.

How Does this Benefit Your Business?
Our SIMRP can provide a business with a structured way to enhance employee benefits while improving payroll tax efficiency. When implemented and administered in accordance with IRS guidelines, eligible medical reimbursements can be delivered on a tax-advantaged basis, and portions of employee contributions may reduce taxable wages, which in turn can lower your business' FICA obligations.
At the same time, employees gain access to additional healthcare resources—such as telemedicine, mental health support and prescription benefits—without increasing the district’s direct benefit spend. The result is a program that can strengthen overall compensation, support employee well-being, and create measurable budget efficiencies, all while operating alongside your business' existing health plan.

Employer Savings

By allowing employees to pay for certain benefits, such as health insurance, with pre-tax dollars, employers can reduce their payroll tax liability. For example, employers can save approximately $500 to $590 per employee each year on payroll taxes due to the lower taxable wages resulting from these pre-tax deductions.
Depending on the number of eligible employees a given business has, this savings can easily add up to millions of dollars annually!

Financing the Plan
Typically, the most difficult concept to grasp is the mechanics of how the plan is financed. A SIMRP utilizes the laws surrounding various tax codes in order to facilitate an IRS code compliant plan that provides an abundance of benefits to employers and employees. This video will take you on a guided tour and explain the tax deduction and subsequent reimbursement process.

Sounds Too Good To Be True
That is a typical response when we unfurl the benefits of the SIMRP to folks for the first time. We can assure you it is a legal tax incentive program, however the SIMRP isn't for everyone. An organization MUST qualify for the plan. Like all government tax incentive programs there are rules:
1: The plan is only available for Full Time Employees or Full Time Equivalent. Rule of thumb - If you provide benefits for an employee currently, they will qualify for the SIMRP.
2: The plan is only available to W-2 employees. Around 10% of the US workforce file a 1099. That means around 17 million people in the USA will not qualify for SIMRP benefits.
3: Participants MUST have Affordable care Act (ACA) compliant health coverage. Employees don't have to be covered under the school district's plan directly. They just need compliant health coverage. The SIMRP is an incentive for those who have health insurance.
